About mi-ji
In Japan, there is a culture of kanji, a set of characters that originated from Chinese. The significance of a name changes based on the choice of kanji characters. The greater the number of kanji, the more common the name. A name with only a few kanji variations is unfamiliar and unique — and the epitome of uncommon beauty.
mi-ji was created in the hopes of helping every person find their epitome of uncommon beauty. Our app combines traditional Asian skincare practices with mindfulness rituals and modern techniques to help you transform your daily skincare routine into your own mi-ji — beauty time — a lifelong practice for body, mind, and spirit.
About Anita Chan
mi-ji founder Anita Chan was born and raised in San Francisco. She started working in skincare and wellness at just 14 years old, when she convinced her mother to sign off on an after-school job doing makeup. Her early interest in the industry stemmed from her own struggles with self-image and beauty culture. As a first-generation Asian American teen, she grew up comparing herself against Asian beauty standards and white representations of beauty in magazines and on T.V. Her professional journey helped her recognize the beauty of her own skin and reject so-called “standards” to develop personal skincare rituals that made her feel beautiful and balanced.
Chan worked at luxury spas and med spas in both San Francisco and Los Angeles before she opened the renowned Anita B Spa in San Francisco, where she honed her speciality: custom treatments for clients’ unique skin types. Everything she does is guided by her belief that our skin is a mirror to what’s going on elsewhere — internally, physically, mentally and emotionally. She developed mi-ji to bring her approach and philosophy to clients anywhere and to offer support to anyone who has ever questioned whether they’re doing skincare “right.”
